Turmeric is a member of the ginger family looking like a ginger root but of an orange yellow color. It has been used for thousands of years in a wide range of cultures for both culinary and medicinal purposes but is native to southwest India. To use fresh turmeric root lightly scrap the skin off with the edge of a spoon then grate or cut like ginger root. Here is the dry equivalent: 1 tablespoon (~1 inch) fresh grated is equal to 1 teaspoon dry ground turmeric.
