9 Simple ways to reduce fluid retention (Edema) for swelling and pain relief.
Fluid or water retention, known as Edema, is caused by to much accumulation of fluid in the body or specific body parts. Most common being hands, feet, ankles, legs and face. Edema can also be organ specific such as fluid in the brain, lungs, skin surface, or eyes.
Typical causes of water retention can be humid weather, accumulated toxins, injury inflammation, allergic reactions, hormonal changes, or pregnancy. More serious condition indicators may be heart disease, circulatory problems, lymphatic system dysfunction, abnormal thyroid function, malnourishment (low-protein), or irregular kidney functions.
Most water retention can be reduced using some of the following simple methods. If you experience persistent water retention and pain contact a medical professional.
Review the 9 simple ways to reduce water retention below. Share what you think.
1. Reduce Salt (sodium) Intake:
Mayo Clinic recommends less than 2300mg of sodium a day for people under 50 years old. 1500 mg per day for people over 50 years old, or with high blood pressure, diabetes, or kidney issues. There is really no need to add additional salt to foods because most processed foods have too much sodium (check the label) and most restaurant food is cooked with salt.
2. Increase Potassium:
The proper levels of potassium helps muscles of the body function better and flush out toxins. Some potassium rich foods include:
Dehydration can actually cause bloating because the body hangs on to water when it fears a shortage. Drinking water (not soda or sugary drinks) also helps flush toxins and aids in proper kidney functioning. Add citrus, melon (potassium), or cucumber to flavor the water and get an additional benefit. Try an infuser bottle for fruits & veggies
4. Increase Magnesium:
Magnesium is another mineral your body uses to function properly. It is needed by DNA, RNA and over 300 different enzymes. The proper levels of magnesium will lower water retention as the body starts to function better. Natural sources of magnesium are: nuts, whole grains, cocoa, leafy greens and reduce alcohol consumption which interferes with proper absorption rates.
5. Use Natural Diuretic Herbs:
Diuretics are used to help flush the kidneys for better functioning, toxin removal and reduces water retention. Avoid the side effects of diuretic pills by using natural diuretic herbs. Some of these are: Dandelion root, Parsley, Garlic, Horsetail, Fennel, Corn Silk, Nettle, Hawthorn or Roselle Hibiscus.
This B vitamin helps the body convert foods and stored fats into energy. Slower metabolism lets fluids accumulate in the body. Vitamin B6 increases metabolism levels. Natural vitamin B6 can be found in the following foods: bananas, potatoes, nuts (salt free), whole grains, beans, dark leafy greens.
7. Increase Fiber Intake:
Fiber is key to scrubbing the intestinal tract and colon. The more efficient the intestinal tract the more nutrients are absorbed in the body while more toxins and extra fluids are flushed out. The best natural fibers are raw vegetables and fruits, and whole grains. Try a bowl of steel cut oats with fresh berries.
8. Move Around:
Moving the body around gets the blood moving and flushing out fluids. If a limb is stiff with edema elevate it and gentling move it to get fluids moving away. Some think exercise is an organized sweaty effort but it can be any gentle moving such as walking, limb swinging, muscle tightening, gentile stretching, etc. Of course if you are up to more, sweating is another good way to flush out toxins as well as get the blood moving faster to do it’s job.

9. Eliminate Processed Packaged Food and Beverages:
Many processed foods and beverages are loaded with salt, sugars, and a long list of other ingredients many can’t pronounce. The saying “if you can’t read it should you eat it” seems like a good guide. Most processed food and beverage product’s ingredients cause a spike in blood sugar and insulin levels and thus fluid retention. Eat and drink original, natural, raw foods and watch the water retention leave the body.
Caution: If you try many of these methods and the water retention does not reduce check with a medical professional in case of a more serious medical ailment.
